BMI Calculator: What Your Number Really Means

Understand what your BMI tells you, its limitations, how it compares to body fat percentage, and when to use other health metrics.

What Is BMI?

Body Mass Index is a calculation using height and weight to estimate whether you are underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. The formula: BMI = weight in kg divided by height in meters squared.

The BMI scale: Below 18.5 is underweight. 18.5 to 24.9 is normal weight. 25.0 to 29.9 is overweight. 30.0 to 34.9 is Class I obesity. 35.0 to 39.9 is Class II obesity. 40.0 and above is Class III obesity.

BMI was developed in the 1830s as a population-level screening tool. It was never intended to diagnose individual health.

What BMI Gets Right

Despite criticism, BMI remains useful. At the population level, BMIs above 30 are consistently associated with increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and shorter life expectancy.

BMI is free, instant, and requires no equipment. For roughly 80% of the population who are not very muscular or unusually tall or short, BMI provides a reasonable health estimate. Our calculator also shows BMI Prime, healthy weight range, and estimated body fat percentage.

Where BMI Falls Short

BMI cannot distinguish between muscle and fat. A bodybuilder with 10% body fat and a sedentary person with 35% body fat can have the same BMI.

BMI does not account for fat distribution. Belly fat is much more dangerous than fat in hips and thighs. Two people with identical BMIs can have very different health risks.

BMI categories were developed from European population data and may not apply equally across all ethnicities.

Better Metrics Alongside BMI

Waist circumference is the best single predictor of metabolic health risk. Above 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women signals increased risk. Waist-to-height ratio of 0.5 or below is associated with lower health risks across all ages.

Body fat percentage directly measures fat versus lean mass. Healthy ranges are 10-20% for men and 18-28% for women. Our BMI calculator includes a body fat estimate based on age and BMI.

If you exercise regularly and carry significant muscle, body fat percentage is much better than BMI for assessing health.

When to See a Doctor

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. Consult a healthcare provider if your BMI is consistently above 30, if your BMI is above 25 with other risk factors like high blood pressure or family history of diabetes, if your BMI is below 18.5 with symptoms like fatigue or hair loss, or if your weight changed significantly without intentional effort.

A doctor can order precise tests like DEXA scans, blood work for metabolic markers, and evaluate your overall health in context no calculator can provide.

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

What is a healthy BMI for my age?

Standard BMI categories apply to all adults 20 and older. Some research suggests slightly higher BMIs of 25-27 may be associated with lower mortality in adults over 65.

Can BMI be too low?
