The Rule of 72 is a quick mental math shortcut to estimate how long it takes to double your money. Divide 72 by your annual interest rate.

At 6%: 72 / 6 = 12 years to double. At 8%: 72 / 8 = 9 years to double. At 10%: 72 / 10 = 7.2 years to double.

This means at 8% returns, $10,000 becomes $20,000 in 9 years, $40,000 in 18 years, and $80,000 in 27 years without adding a single dollar.

Daily vs Monthly vs Annual Compounding

$10,000 at 7% for 20 years: Annual compounding gives $38,697. Monthly compounding gives $40,387. Daily compounding gives $40,552.

The jump from annual to monthly is meaningful ($1,690). The jump from monthly to daily is minimal ($165). Most savings accounts compound daily, while investment returns compound based on market performance.

How Inflation Affects Returns

Inflation silently erodes the purchasing power of your returns. If your investments earn 8% but inflation averages 3%, your real return is approximately 5%.
